AFC Leopards are one of the historic names of Kenyan football. Known as Ingwe, the Nairobi club carries a blue-and-white identity, a record of success at home and across East and Central Africa, and one of the country’s fiercest rivalries.
The club was founded on 12 March 1964 as Abaluhya United Football Club. Its roots lie in Nairobi’s Luhya community, and football gave supporters from western Kenya a powerful shared identity in the country’s capital.
The name evolved over the following decades before AFC Leopards was adopted in 1980. Although the badge, shirts and wording have changed over time, the club’s history is treated as one continuous story stretching back to 1964.
AFC Leopards have won the Kenyan top-flight championship 12 times. Their first league crown arrived in 1966 and their most recent came in 1989, placing the club among the leading title winners in the history of Kenya’s national league.
The Leopards also built a formidable regional reputation by winning the CECAFA Club Championship five times. Domestic cup successes add further depth to an honours list created across several different eras of Kenyan football.
AFC Leopards’ defining rivalry is with Gor Mahia. Their meeting is known as the Mashemeji Derby and has been one of the landmark fixtures in Kenyan football since the clubs first met in 1968.
The derby brings together two enormous supporter traditions: AFC Leopards’ Ingwe and Gor Mahia’s K’Ogalo. Matches are commonly staged at Nyayo National Stadium, with larger occasions also associated with the Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani.
AFC Leopards play their home matches primarily at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. Opened in 1983, the multi-purpose venue has hosted domestic league matches, cup finals and major international football.
The club’s following reaches far beyond the capital. Supporters and organised branches across Kenya and overseas have helped preserve AFC Leopards as a community-driven institution with a national profile.
Blue and white are AFC Leopards’ traditional colours. They have appeared as hoops, vertical stripes, blocks and predominantly blue designs, allowing different generations of shirts to look distinct while retaining the club’s familiar identity.
Ingwe means “leopard” in Luhya and connects the nickname directly to the crest and club name. This FanFile covers AFC Leopards as a team rather than one particular jersey, so check the crest, sponsor, manufacturer label and product code on your shirt when identifying its season.
