Athletic Club are one of world football's most unique institutions. History
Founded in 1898, Athletic Club have never been relegated from the Spanish top flight — one of only three clubs alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona to achieve this. Their Basque-only player policy, in place for over a century, is a statement of cultural identity rather than a limitation.
San Mamés — "The Cathedral" — is regarded as one of Spain's finest football grounds. The current stadium, opened in 2013, maintains the atmosphere of the old ground while providing world-class facilities. Athletic are also known for one of the most passionate supporter cultures in European football.
Kit History & Colours
Athletic Club's red and white vertical stripes are iconic in Spanish and world football. The design is said to have been inspired by Southampton's kit in the late 19th century, brought to Bilbao by English workers. The stripes have remained virtually unchanged for over 125 years — a mark of the club's respect for tradition.
