Atlético Madrid are Spanish football's great alternative — a club defined by defiance, passion and an unshakeable belief that they can compete with anyone. Under Diego Simeone they became one of Europe's most feared sides, reaching two Champions League finals and winning La Liga against all expectations.
Founded in 1903, Atlético Madrid have spent much of their history in the shadow of city rivals Real Madrid, but have carved out their own legendary status through sheer determination. They have won 11 La Liga titles and reached the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016, both times losing to Real Madrid in heartbreaking fashion.
Under Diego Simeone, who has managed the club since 2011, Atlético became synonymous with defensive solidity, fighting spirit and the famous concept of "partido a partido" — game by game. Their move to the Cívitas Metropolitano in 2017 gave them one of Europe's finest modern stadiums.
Atlético's red and white vertical stripes are one of football's most distinctive kits. The colchonero — mattress maker — nickname comes from the red and white striped mattresses once manufactured near their original ground. The stripes have been a constant since the early 20th century and are deeply embedded in the club's identity.
Their away kits, often bold and creative, have produced some of football's most memorable alternative designs over the decades.
