Barbarian F.C. are one of rugby’s most unique and respected teams — an invitational side built on flair, freedom and attacking rugby. Known simply as the Barbarians, they represent the spirit of the game rather than any one nation, bringing together elite players from across the world.
Founded in 1890 by William Percy Carpmael, the Barbarians were created as a touring team that brought players together from different clubs and countries. Selection is by invitation only, making it one of rugby union’s greatest honours.
The Barbarians are famous for their attacking philosophy and entertaining style of play. Their fixtures — often against international teams — have produced some of rugby’s most iconic moments, including the legendary team try scored against New Zealand in 1973.
The Barbarians kit is instantly recognisable — black and white hoops paired with players wearing their own club socks. This tradition reflects the team’s identity as a gathering of individuals rather than a single club.
The shirt has remained largely unchanged for over a century, symbolising tradition, respect and the pure enjoyment of rugby.
