History
Founded in 1904, Benfica are the most decorated club in Portuguese football history. They won back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962 under the legendary Béla Guttmann, whose infamous curse — after being refused a pay rise following the second title — supposedly explains why Benfica have not won in Europe since.
The Estádio da Luz, rebuilt for Euro 2004, holds over 64,000 and is one of Europe's finest grounds. Benfica's fierce rivalry with Porto and Sporting CP — the Três Grandes — is central to Portuguese football culture. The club also holds the world record for most paid-up members of any sports club.
