The Blues represent New Zealand’s largest city and a rugby region stretching from Auckland to the Far North. Champions in the first two seasons of Super Rugby, they returned to the summit in 2024 and restored the blue jersey to a place among the competition’s most recognisable champions.
The Blues were established by the New Zealand Rugby Union in 1996 for the new professional Super 12 competition. Initially representing Auckland, Counties Manukau and Thames Valley, the franchise became one of the dominant forces of Super Rugby’s opening era.
Regional boundaries changed at the end of the 1990s. North Harbour and Northland became aligned with the Blues, while Counties Manukau and Thames Valley moved into the Chiefs region. Today, the Blues are connected with the Auckland, North Harbour and Northland provincial unions.
The Blues won the inaugural Super 12 title in 1996 and successfully defended it in 1997. They returned to the final in 1998, making three consecutive championship appearances at the beginning of the professional era.
A third title followed in 2003. That team combined power with attacking flair and included Carlos Spencer, whose creativity and scoring made him one of the defining Blues players of the period.
The Blues ended a long wait for silverware by winning Super Rugby Trans-Tasman in 2021. They defeated the Highlanders 23-15 in the final at Eden Park, claiming a regional-format championship played during the disrupted pandemic era.
In 2024, the Blues won the full Super Rugby Pacific title. Caleb Clarke scored three tries as the Auckland side defeated the Chiefs 41-10 at Eden Park, delivering the franchise’s first complete Super Rugby championship since 2003.
Eden Park has been home to the Blues since their first season in 1996. New Zealand’s national stadium has staged the franchise’s biggest matches, including the 2021 Trans-Tasman final and the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific final.
The Blues confirmed the venue as their principal home for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Its Auckland location and major-match history make Eden Park a central part of the club’s identity.
The Blues organisation also fields a women’s team in Super Rugby Aupiki. Blues Women won their first Aupiki championship in 2024, defeating Chiefs Manawa 24-18 in the final.
That title belongs to Blues Women and is separate from the men’s Super Rugby record. This FanFile focuses primarily on the men’s Blues team, while recognising that both sides now contribute to the wider club identity.
Blue is the defining colour of the franchise and has remained central across different kit eras. Navy, royal and brighter blue tones have all appeared, often supported by white detailing and patterns connected with Auckland and the wider northern region.
This FanFile covers the team rather than one particular jersey. Manufacturers, sponsors, collar styles and graphic patterns vary by season, so check the crest, label and product code on your own shirt when identifying its exact edition.
