Canada

Canada's football story has changed massively over the last decade. For years, the men's national team sat outside the main World Cup conversation, with their first appearance coming in 1986 and a long wait before returning to the tournament in 2022. That return in Qatar was not perfect, but it gave Canada something important: belief, visibility and a generation of players ready to push the country forward.

The modern Canada team is built around pace, athleticism and players competing at a high level across Europe and North America. Alphonso Davies became the face of the rise, Jonathan David brought elite goalscoring quality, and players like Stephen Eustáquio, Tajon Buchanan, Ismaël Koné, Alistair Johnston and Cyle Larin helped turn Canada into a serious CONCACAF force.

The 2026 World Cup was different because Canada were not just participating — they were co-hosting. They opened Group B with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, thrashed Qatar 6-0, then lost 2-1 to Switzerland to finish second on four points. A 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32 was Canada's first ever World Cup knockout victory, before Morocco won 3-0 in the last 16.

Bosnia and Herzegovina were Canada's opening opponents and brought technical quality, European experience and a proud football culture. Opening matches are always tense for a host nation, and this one finished 1-1.

Qatar brought recent host-nation experience after staging the 2022 World Cup. Canada treated it as a must-win and delivered in style, scoring six without reply.

Switzerland were the strongest test in Group B. Organised, experienced and consistently awkward at major tournaments, they beat Canada 2-1 to take top spot, leaving the hosts to qualify as runners-up.

Red and white — clean, bold and instantly tied to the Canadian flag. Canada's national-team identity is usually built around strong red home shirts, white details and maple leaf symbolism. It is a simple colour palette, but one that carried huge meaning at a home World Cup.

For mystery shirt fans, Canada are a strong World Cup pull because the shirt carries host-nation energy. This is not just a football shirt — it is tied to the biggest tournament ever staged across North America, a growing football culture and a team that made history in front of its own supporters.
