Australia's capital city club and one of rugby league's most beloved underdogs-turned-champions. The Raiders won three premierships in six seasons between 1989 and 1994, building a passionate fanbase in Canberra that has remained fiercely loyal ever since. Lime green, loud, and proud of their unique identity in the NRL.

History

The Canberra Raiders were founded in 1981 and joined the NSWRL competition in 1982, becoming the first team from the Australian Capital Territory to compete at the top level of rugby league. Under coach Tim Sheens, the Raiders built one of the most exciting teams of the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning the premiership in 1989, 1991, and 1994 — a remarkable achievement for a club from Australia's smallest capital city.

The Raiders' 1989 premiership — their first — was won with a team built around Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, and Ricky Stuart, players who would go on to define Australian rugby league for a generation. The club's distinctive lime green jersey became one of the most recognisable in the competition, and the Raiders developed a reputation for tough, physical, and entertaining rugby league that endeared them to fans well beyond Canberra. The club reached the 2019 NRL Grand Final, losing narrowly to the Sydney Roosters, confirming their continued relevance at the top of the competition.

Kit History & Colours

Lime green — the Raiders' colour is one of the most distinctive and instantly recognisable in Australian sport. The bold lime green jersey has been worn since the club's early years and gives the Raiders an identity that stands apart from every other team in the NRL. It is a colour that divides opinion but commands attention, worn with enormous pride by a fanbase that has embraced the Raiders' unique identity as the capital city's team.

The Raiders' home lime green jersey is worn at GIO Stadium in Canberra — a ground that has hosted some of the most memorable matches in NRL history and generates one of the most passionate atmospheres in the competition. The green machine identity is central to everything the Raiders represent — a club that punches above its weight, plays with heart, and refuses to be overlooked in a competition dominated by Sydney clubs.

Mal Meninga
Mal Meninga is the greatest player in Canberra Raiders history and one of the most powerful centres rugby league has ever seen. A physically imposing, technically brilliant centre with an extraordinary try-scoring record, Meninga was the cornerstone of the Raiders' three premiership-winning teams and one of the defining figures of Australian rugby league in the 1980s and 1990s. He earned 46 Test caps for Australia and captained the Kangaroos, later going on to coach Queensland to an unprecedented run of State of Origin success. Meninga's combination of power, skill, and leadership made him the benchmark for centres in the NRL era and the definitive Raiders legend.
