History
Chile hosted the 1962 World Cup and finished third — their best ever World Cup result — with a squad that played some of the most physical and passionate football of the tournament era. They have been a consistent presence in South American football ever since, regularly qualifying for World Cups and Copa América tournaments.
Their golden era came under coach Jorge Sampaoli and then Juan Antonio Pizzi, when a squad built around Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal, and Gary Medel won back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016 — defeating Argentina on penalties in both finals. It remains the most successful period in Chilean football history and produced some of the most entertaining football seen in South America in decades.
