Club Puebla
Club Puebla are instantly recognisable by the diagonal blue stripe across their white home shirt. Known as La Franja, the club represents the historic Mexican city of Puebla and has won two national league championships, five domestic cups and the leading club title in North and Central America.
Representing Puebla Since 1944
Club Puebla were officially founded on 7 May 1944 and entered Mexico’s professional game during its early years. The team made an immediate impression, finishing as league runners-up in its first campaign and winning its first major cup the following season.
The club’s identity has remained closely tied to Puebla, a city famous for its history, architecture and Talavera pottery. Blue and white reflect the colours associated with the city, while the diagonal stripe gives the team one of the clearest visual signatures in Mexican football.
Champions in 1983 and 1990
Puebla won their first Mexican league championship in the 1982/83 season. After losing the first leg of the final against Guadalajara, La Franja recovered at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc and claimed the title through a dramatic penalty shootout.
A second league crown followed in 1989/90 under coach Manuel Lapuente. Puebla also won the domestic cup that season, completing a celebrated league-and-cup double remembered as the club’s Campeonísimo achievement.
CONCACAF Champions in 1991
The success of 1989/90 carried Puebla into continental competition. In 1991, the club won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, the predecessor of today’s CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Puebla defeated Police FC of Trinidad and Tobago in the final to secure the leading international trophy in the club’s history. The victory completed a remarkable period built around players including Jorge Aravena, Carlos Poblete and Pablo Larios.
Estadio Cuauhtémoc
Club Puebla have played at Estadio Cuauhtémoc since 1968. The stadium has hosted matches at two FIFA World Cups, welcoming international teams during both Mexico 1970 and Mexico 1986.
The ground has also staged the defining moments of Puebla’s domestic success. It was renovated during the 2010s and reopened in 2015, retaining its place as one of the most recognisable football venues in Mexico.
The Famous Blue Stripe
Puebla’s traditional home jersey is white with a blue diagonal stripe, the feature behind the La Franja nickname. Away designs commonly reverse the colours, placing a white stripe across a blue base.
