History
Croatia burst onto the international scene at their first World Cup in 1998, finishing third in France with Davor Šuker winning the Golden Boot. Twenty years later they went one better, reaching the 2018 final in Russia where they lost 4–2 to France after a remarkable run that included penalty shootout victories over Denmark, Russia, and hosts Russia.
At Qatar 2022, an ageing squad led by the incomparable Luka Modrić finished third again, defeating Brazil on penalties in the quarter-finals. Croatia's consistency at major tournaments is extraordinary for a country of their size, and the chequered shirt has become one of the most iconic in world football.
