Croatian Celts bring Gaelic football to Zagreb and connect Croatia with the international GAA community. Officially affiliated in 2019, the club combines Irish sporting tradition with a multinational membership and a visual identity inspired by Croatia’s famous red-and-white checks.
The idea behind Croatian Celts began in Zagreb in 2018. Neil McNulty and Seamus Hempenstall helped develop the club from conversations and early gatherings at Sheridan’s, an Irish bar that had become a meeting place for members of the city’s Irish community.
An introductory session at Rudeš rugby club attracted enough interest to turn the idea into an organised team. Croatian Celts officially joined the GAA in December 2019 with support from the Embassy of Ireland and the wider local Irish community.
Croatian Celts are based in Zagreb and compete within the Central/East region of Gaelic Games Europe. That structure connects the club with teams across countries including Austria, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland.
The club has travelled to tournaments in cities such as Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest, while also welcoming visiting teams to Zagreb. These fixtures are especially important for developing clubs whose nearest opponents may be in another country.
One of the club’s early competitive landmarks arrived in 2022 at the Central and East European Gaelic Football Championship in Bratislava. Croatian Celts shared the Shield with Italian side Lazio after an encouraging tournament performance.
For a young club established shortly before the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the result represented meaningful progress and reflected the team’s growing involvement in regional European competition.
Croatian Celts were established through the Irish community in Zagreb, but the club’s membership extends well beyond one nationality. Gaelic Games Europe describes a mix of Irish and Croatian members alongside players originally from Australia, England, Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
That international character reflects the wider story of Gaelic games in continental Europe: clubs become sporting communities for Irish emigrants while introducing football to local players and people from many other backgrounds.
The club’s official name is Croatian Celts. “Croatian Celtics GAA” is an understandable search variation, but it is not the name used by the club, Gaelic Games Europe or the Embassy of Ireland.
Using the official name is the best way to find accurate club information and avoid confusion with other GAA teams whose names include Celtic or Celtics.
Croatian Celts jerseys draw on Croatia’s recognisable national sporting identity. Red-and-white checks have appeared prominently alongside blue detailing, creating a design that immediately connects the Zagreb club with its home country.
This FanFile covers the club rather than one specific jersey. Designs, sponsors and colour balance can change between editions, so check the crest, manufacturer label, product code and finer details on your own shirt when identifying its season.
