HonoursNRL debut season 2023 — story just beginning

The NRL's newest club and the first expansion team to join the competition in over two decades. The Dolphins represent Redcliffe and the Moreton Bay region of Queensland, bringing top-flight rugby league to a community with deep roots in the game. Teal and white, fresh and ambitious — the Dolphins are writing their story one season at a time.

History

The Dolphins were granted an NRL licence in 2021, becoming the competition's 17th team and the first new club to join since the Gold Coast Titans in 2007. Based in Redcliffe — a peninsula community north of Brisbane with a proud rugby league history through the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup — the club entered the NRL in 2023 under the ownership of the Dolphins Rugby League Club, one of the most successful state-level clubs in Queensland history.

The club appointed Wayne Bennett — the most successful coach in rugby league history — as their inaugural NRL head coach, a statement of intent that immediately generated enormous excitement. The Dolphins' debut NRL season in 2023 exceeded expectations, with the club finishing in the top eight and reaching the finals in their very first year — a remarkable achievement for an expansion team. The club is building its fanbase, its squad, and its identity with the ambition of becoming a genuine NRL premiership contender in the years ahead.

Kit History & Colours

Teal and white — the Dolphins' colours are fresh, distinctive, and unlike anything else in the NRL. The teal jersey was chosen to reflect the coastal identity of Redcliffe and the Moreton Bay region, giving the club an immediately recognisable identity in the competition. It is a bold choice that has been embraced by the club's growing fanbase and gives the Dolphins a visual identity that stands apart from every other team in the NRL.

The Dolphins' kit is worn at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe — a ground that has been upgraded to NRL standard and generates an extraordinary atmosphere for a club playing its first seasons at the top level. The dolphin emblem on the chest connects the NRL club to the Redcliffe Dolphins' long history in Queensland rugby league and gives the kit a sense of heritage despite the club's newness to the national competition.

Wayne Bennett (Coach)
While the Dolphins are still producing their first generation of NRL legends, the appointment of Wayne Bennett as inaugural head coach was the defining statement of the club's ambitions. Bennett is the most successful coach in rugby league history, having won seven NRL premierships with Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra, and South Sydney Rabbitohs. His decision to take on the challenge of building an expansion club from scratch — at an age when most coaches have long retired — speaks to his passion for the game and his belief in the Dolphins project. Under Bennett, the Dolphins reached the NRL finals in their debut 2023 season, setting the foundation for what the club hopes will be a long and successful future in the competition.
