Dragons RFC

The Dragons were formed in 2003 as the regional successor to Newport RFC and Ebbw Vale RFC, drawing on the rugby heritage of the Gwent valleys — a region that has produced Welsh internationals for over 150 years. Newport RFC's greatest moment came in 1963 when they defeated the All Blacks 3–0 at Rodney Parade, one of only a handful of clubs to have beaten the All Blacks on tour. The Dragons inherited that proud tradition and the fierce loyalty of a rugby community that stretches from Newport to the valleys of Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent.

The Dragons have faced significant challenges in the professional era, competing against better-resourced regions and clubs, but have remained a vital part of Welsh rugby and a consistent developer of Welsh international talent. Players including Taulupe Faletau, Adam Jones, and Cory Hill all came through the Dragons system before representing Wales and the British & Irish Lions. The region continues to compete in the United Rugby Championship and the European Challenge Cup, representing the communities of southeast Wales with determination and pride.

Black and red — the Dragons' colours reflect the identity of the region and connect the club to the broader Welsh rugby tradition. The combination gives the Dragons a distinctive identity within Welsh rugby, separate from the scarlet of the Scarlets and the blue and black of Cardiff. The dragon emblem on the chest is one of the most powerful symbols in Welsh sport, worn with the pride of a region that has been central to Welsh rugby since the game began.

The Dragons' home kit is worn at Rodney Parade — one of the oldest and most characterful grounds in Welsh rugby, shared with Newport County AFC. The ground's compact size and passionate atmosphere make it one of the most distinctive venues in the URC, and the black and red of the Dragons is worn there with the determination of a club that knows it represents communities where rugby is woven into the fabric of daily life.
