Eintracht Braunschweig
Eintracht Braunschweig are one of northern Germany’s historic football clubs. Known as Die Löwen, the Lions play in blue and yellow at the Eintracht-Stadion and remain forever associated with their celebrated German championship triumph in 1967.
A Braunschweig Institution Since 1895
The club was founded in 1895 and developed into one of the leading football names in Lower Saxony. Eintracht Braunschweig were among the 16 founding members of the Bundesliga when Germany’s national professional league began in 1963.
The team’s home is the Eintracht-Stadion on Hamburger Straße. Generations of supporters have watched the Lions there through Bundesliga campaigns, promotions, relegations and memorable cup ties.
German Champions in 1967
Eintracht Braunschweig won the 1966/67 Bundesliga title under coach Helmuth Johannsen. The Lions began the season as outsiders but built their success on organisation, consistency and a powerful team ethic.
The championship was secured in June 1967, when captain Joachim Bäse lifted the trophy at the Eintracht-Stadion following a 4–1 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg. It remains the defining achievement in the club’s history.
A Shirt That Changed German Football
Eintracht Braunschweig hold an unusual place in football-shirt history. In March 1973, the team appeared with the Jägermeister stag emblem on its shirts, helping to introduce commercial shirt sponsorship to the Bundesliga.
That episode makes vintage Braunschweig shirts especially distinctive. Designs from different eras may feature variations of the lion crest, the stag emblem, sponsor branding and the club’s familiar blue-and-yellow palette.
The Lower Saxony Derby
Matches against Hannover 96 are known as the Lower Saxony derby. The rivalry connects two of the region’s best-supported clubs and is one of the most intense fixtures in German football outside the country’s top division.
Blue, Yellow and the Lion
Blue and yellow are central to Eintracht Braunschweig’s identity. The lion on the crest reflects the symbol long associated with the city of Braunschweig and inspires the club’s Die Löwen nickname.
