Fortuna Düsseldorf is one of German football’s historic names. The red-and-white club has been German champion, won consecutive DFB-Pokal finals and contested a European showpiece against Barcelona, while its journey through the divisions has strengthened its bond with the city and supporters.

Tradition Since 1895

Fortuna traces its roots to Turnverein Flingern 1895, founded on 5 May 1895. The organisation began as a gymnastics club before football and the Fortuna name became part of its identity.

The nickname Die Flingeraner remembers the club’s origins in Düsseldorf’s Flingern district. The name Fortuna refers to the Roman goddess of fortune and was reportedly inspired by a passing horse-drawn bakery carriage carrying the word Fortuna.

The 1933 National Title

Fortuna won its first and only German championship in 1933. The Düsseldorf side defeated Schalke 04 by 3–0 in the final, completing the championship tournament without conceding a goal.

The title remains the club’s greatest domestic honour. It came three decades before the creation of the Bundesliga and secured Fortuna’s place among Germany’s national champions.

Cup Triumphs and a European Final

Fortuna enjoyed a sustained Bundesliga run during the 1970s and 1980s. The club finished third in consecutive seasons and reached three successive DFB-Pokal finals from 1978 to 1980.

After losing the first of those finals, Fortuna won the cup in both 1979 and 1980. The club also reached the 1979 European Cup Winners’ Cup final, producing a memorable contest before losing 4–3 to Barcelona after extra time.

Fortuna for All

Fortuna launched the Fortuna für Alle—“Fortuna for All”—initiative with the long-term ambition of making admission to home league matches free for supporters. Selected fixtures have been staged with free tickets funded through commercial partnerships.

The project reflects the club’s emphasis on supporter access and its connection with Düsseldorf, creating a modern chapter in a history shaped by both major triumphs and difficult journeys through the German divisions.

Klaus Allofs

Klaus Allofs
Düsseldorf-born Klaus Allofs emerged from Fortuna’s youth system and became one of the stars of the club’s golden era. He helped win the 1979 and 1980 DFB-Pokal trophies and scored 22 league goals to finish as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer in 1978/79. Allofs later returned to Fortuna in senior management roles.

Red and White

Red and white are the defining Fortuna Düsseldorf colours. Home shirts have appeared in solid red, stripes and other variations, but the circular red-and-white F95 crest provides a constant link to the club’s identity and 1895 roots.

This FanFile covers Fortuna Düsseldorf rather than one particular shirt. Manufacturers, sponsors, patterns and trim change between seasons, so check the garment label and product code on your jersey to identify its exact edition.
