Gibraltar Lions are a top-flight club with an origin story linked to one of football’s most famous summers. Formed amid the excitement of England’s 1966 World Cup victory, the club adopted the Lions name and a three-lions identity that remains central to its badge and shirts.

Born in the Summer of 1966

Lions Football Club was formed in Gibraltar in 1966 by a group of friends inspired by England’s World Cup triumph. Special permission allowed the new team to use a three-lions emblem, creating a direct visual link between the club’s name, crest and origin.

The club’s history later became connected with Gibraltar United. The sides combined during the modern development of Gibraltar football, with the Lions name continuing as Lions Gibraltar Football Club.

Life in a Unique Domestic League

Gibraltar Lions compete in the Gibraltar Football League, the territory’s senior domestic competition. Gibraltar’s compact geography means its clubs share national football facilities rather than operating from separate traditional home stadiums.

The Gibraltar Football Association became a full UEFA member in 2013. That decision gave the territory’s domestic clubs a pathway into UEFA competitions and brought wider international attention to a league played beneath the Rock of Gibraltar.

Building a Stronger Club

The Lions have spent the modern UEFA era competing in Gibraltar’s top division. Their best league finish during the early years after Gibraltar joined UEFA was fourth place in 2015/16.

A change of ownership in 2024 began another phase in the club’s development. The Lions continued in the Gibraltar Football League and finished fifth in the 2025/26 season before entering the 2026/27 campaign.

Why Three Lions Appear on the Badge

The three lions are not a coincidence or simply a reference to the club’s name. They recall the event that inspired its formation: England winning the 1966 World Cup.

This gives Gibraltar Lions one of the clearest links between a club badge and a specific moment in international football history. It is also a useful detail when distinguishing an official Lions jersey from the shirts of other clubs with similar names.

Orange, Black and the Lions Crest

Orange has become the most recognisable colour in the club’s modern kits, often combined with black, white or blue details. The three-lions crest provides continuity even when shirt designs, secondary colours and sponsors change.
