Girondins de Bordeaux

Founded in 1881, Girondins de Bordeaux are one of France's oldest and most decorated clubs. They dominated French football in the 1980s under coach Aimé Jacquet, winning three league titles, added a fifth championship in 1999, and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1996. Their 2009 Ligue 1 title under Laurent Blanc — featuring Yoann Gourcuff, Marouane Chamakh, and Fernando — was their most recent championship triumph.

Financial mismanagement led to a catastrophic collapse. Bordeaux were relegated from Ligue 1 in 2022 and, after the club entered insolvency proceedings, were administratively demoted to National 2, the fourth tier, in 2024. Two seasons there ended without promotion, and in summer 2026 the club was excluded from the national divisions altogether, so the 2026-27 season is being played in Régional 1, the sixth tier, under new ownership. The Stade Atlantique, one of France's finest modern stadiums, awaits the day the Marine et Blanc return to the top of French football.
