History
Founded in 1881, Girondins de Bordeaux are one of France's oldest and most decorated clubs. They dominated French football in the 1980s and 1990s under coach Éric Cantona's mentor Aimé Jacquet and later Jean Tigana, winning multiple league titles and reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1996. Their 2009 Ligue 1 title under Laurent Blanc — featuring Yoann Gourcuff, Marouane Chamakh, and Fernando — was their most recent championship triumph.
Financial mismanagement led to a catastrophic collapse, with Bordeaux suffering relegation to Ligue 2 and then National 1 — the third tier of French football — in 2023. The club was taken over by Gérard Lopez and has been rebuilding, winning promotion back to Ligue 2. The Stade Matmut Atlantique, one of France's finest modern stadiums, awaits the day the Marine et Blanc return to Ligue 1.
