Gloucester Rugby
Gloucester Rugby are one of England’s historic rugby union clubs. Founded in 1873 and based at Kingsholm since 1891, the Cherry and Whites are known for their red-and-white hoops, the famous Shed terrace and a fiercely local rugby identity.
A Gloucester Institution Since 1873
Gloucester Rugby was formed in 1873 following a meeting at the Spread Eagle Hotel. The club initially played at the Spa before acquiring land from the Castle Grim Estate and moving to Kingsholm in 1891.
That long connection between club, ground and city is central to Gloucester’s identity. Generations of local supporters have followed the team at Kingsholm, helping to make the venue one of the most recognisable grounds in English club rugby.
The Shed and Castle Grim
Kingsholm Stadium has been Gloucester’s home since 1891. The ground is sometimes associated with the old Castle Grim estate name, but its best-known feature is the Shed: a traditional standing terrace running along one touchline.
The Shed’s close view of the pitch and vocal home support have made it an enduring part of Gloucester rugby culture. Kingsholm has also staged international rugby, including matches during the 1991 and 2015 Rugby World Cups.
Domestic Cups and European Success
Gloucester have collected major knockout honours across different eras. The club won England’s leading domestic knockout cup four times between 1972 and 2003, then added the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2011.
European success arrived in the Challenge Cup. Gloucester defeated London Irish to lift the trophy in 2006 and beat Edinburgh 19–13 in the 2015 final, becoming two-time winners of the competition.
