One of rugby union's most celebrated and feared nations. Ireland represent the entire island — drawing players from both the Republic and Northern Ireland — and have built a golden era that has seen them reach the summit of world rugby. The green jersey carries the passion of a nation and the pride of four provinces united as one.

History

The Irish Rugby Football Union was founded in 1879 and Ireland have been a cornerstone of international rugby ever since. The unique nature of the team — representing the entire island of Ireland, drawing players from both the Republic and Northern Ireland — gives the green jersey a special significance that transcends sport. Ireland have won the championship 16 times outright, including Grand Slams in 1948, 2009, 2018, and 2023, and have been one of the most consistent contributors to the British & Irish Lions.

The modern era has been Ireland's most successful. Under coaches Joe Schmidt and Andy Farrell, Ireland rose to become the number one ranked team in the world, winning back-to-back Six Nations titles and delivering a historic first series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand in 2022. The 2023 Rugby World Cup saw Ireland enter as favourites and top their pool, before a quarter-final exit to New Zealand. Ireland added a Triple Crown in 2026. The squad — built around Leinster's dominance and provincial strength — remains one of the most talented in world rugby.

Kit History & Colours

Ireland's green jersey is one of the most iconic in world rugby. The distinctive dark green — worn since the earliest days of Irish international rugby — carries the weight of history and the passion of a nation. It is a colour that unites the island, worn with equal pride by players from Dublin, Belfast, Cork, and Galway, and recognised by rugby fans in every corner of the world.

Canterbury supply Ireland's kits and the partnership has produced some of the most celebrated designs in international rugby. The home green jersey remains the centrepiece, while away kits have featured white and occasionally navy. The shamrock crest and the green of Ireland are among the most powerful symbols in world sport — worn by a team that has earned its place at the very top of the global game.
