Killarney Legion GAA has represented its community in County Kerry since 1929. Known for its green jersey with a white hoop, the club has developed generations of men’s, ladies’ and underage footballers and proudly counts a Kerry Senior Football Championship among its honours.

Founded in Killarney in 1929

Killarney Legion was founded on a March evening in 1929, when eleven men met in the Temperance Hall on High Street. Maurice O’Leary became the club’s first chairman, Joe Cooper its first secretary and Vince Doyle its first team captain.

The club developed into an important part of sporting life in Killarney. Today it provides Gaelic football for boys and girls from academy level through to adult men’s and ladies’ teams, with its home facilities based at Direen.

Kerry Champions in 1946

Legion’s landmark club achievement came in 1946, when it won the Kerry Senior Football Championship. The club returned to the county final in 2015 and finished as runners-up.

Its roll of honour also includes the 1994 Kerry County Club Championship, the 2005 Kerry Intermediate Football Championship and five East Kerry Senior Football Championship titles, known as the O’Donoghue Cup.

Johnny Culloty

Club Great
Johnny Culloty
Johnny Culloty was a celebrated Killarney Legion player who represented Kerry in both Gaelic football and hurling. In 1969 he captained Kerry to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, lifting the Sam Maguire Cup after victory over Offaly. He became the first Sam Maguire-winning captain from East Kerry and remains one of the defining figures in Legion history.

The Lakes of Killarney

Killarney Legion’s crest is based on the traditional GAA Celtic Cross. It includes a football and sliotar, the club’s 1929 foundation year and three blue lozenges representing Killarney’s Upper, Middle and Lower lakes.

The design also features the doorway of the ancient oratory on Innisfallen Island and branches of the arbutus tree, two symbols closely connected with Killarney and its surrounding landscape.

Green with a White Hoop

The club constitution defines Killarney Legion’s first-choice jersey as green with a white hoop, worn with white shorts featuring green trim and green socks with white trim. Black and white form the club’s official second strip.
