History
Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath, Manchester United became one of England's dominant forces under Sir Matt Busby in the 1950s and 60s. The Munich air disaster of 1958 — which claimed the lives of eight players — remains one of football's most tragic moments, and United's subsequent European Cup win in 1968, led by Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best, stands as one of sport's great redemption stories.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson from 1986 to 2013, United became the dominant force in English football — winning 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies. The 1999 treble, sealed by two injury-time goals against Bayern Munich in Barcelona, is widely regarded as the greatest night in the club's history.
Kit History & Colours
Manchester United's red jersey is one of the most recognisable in world sport. The deep red home shirt, worn since the early 20th century, has been home to some of football's greatest players.
