MK Dons are one of the most talked-about clubs in English football, partly for how they came to exist and partly for one August night in 2014 when they put four past Manchester United. In 2026/27 they are back in League One after a promotion season under Paul Warne.
The club’s roots are in Wimbledon FC. In 2002, after the Football League had refused permission, an independent commission appointed by the FA ruled 2–1 in favour of Wimbledon moving to Milton Keynes. Most Wimbledon supporters rejected the move and founded AFC Wimbledon on 30 May 2002. The relocated club went into administration in June 2003, played its first games in Milton Keynes at the National Hockey Stadium from September 2003, and was kept going by Pete Winkelman’s consortium. In June 2004 it took a new name, badge and colours as Milton Keynes Dons.
At first MK Dons claimed Wimbledon’s history, but in 2007 the club gave up that claim. On 2 August 2007 Winkelman handed a collection of Wimbledon FC memorabilia, including a replica FA Cup, back to the London Borough of Merton, in a deal brokered by the Football Supporters’ Federation. The club now dates its own history from 2004.
Stadium MK hosted its first game, against a Chelsea XI, on 18 July 2007 and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II that November. That first season under Paul Ince was the best in the club’s short history. MK Dons won the League Two title and, on 30 March 2008, beat Grimsby Town 2–0 in the Football League Trophy final at Wembley in front of 56,618, with Keith Andrews and Sean O’Hanlon scoring late on.
On 26 August 2014, in the League Cup second round, they beat Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United 4–0 at Stadium MK. Will Grigg scored twice and Benik Afobe added two more. That season ended with promotion to the Championship, sealed by a 5–1 win over Yeovil Town on 3 May 2015, and the club also sold academy graduate Dele Alli to Tottenham that year. Stadium MK’s record crowd is 28,521, against Liverpool in the League Cup in September 2019.
A Kuwaiti consortium led by Fahad Al Ghanim bought the club and Stadium MK in August 2024, ending Winkelman’s 20 years in charge. Paul Warne took over in April 2025 and led MK Dons to second place in League Two in 2025/26, with 86 points and automatic promotion confirmed by a 3–0 win over Tranmere Rovers. League One has been harder going. Six draws came before the first league win, a 2–1 over Luton Town on 17 October 2026 with goals from Alex Gilbey and an Aaron Collins penalty, which left the Dons 20th on nine points from ten games.
MK Dons play in white, with black and gold detailing. The 2024–25 home shirt recreated the 2004–05 original to mark the club’s 20th anniversary. Reebok became kit supplier in 2025, and the 2026–27 away shirt is black with a red geometric pattern and gold logos.
