United Since 1892

Newcastle United was created in 1892 following the unification of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The club adopted the United name and developed at St James’ Park, a ground that had already hosted football before the merger.

Newcastle became a major force in the early twentieth century, winning league championships in 1905, 1907 and 1909. A fourth league title followed in 1927, while the club’s six FA Cup victories were collected between 1910 and 1955.

St James’ Park stands close to Newcastle city centre and has been Newcastle United’s home throughout the club’s history. With a capacity of more than 52,000, its elevated position and distinctive stands make it a defining part of the city skyline.

Modern History

League Cup Winners in 2025

On 16 March 2025, Newcastle United defeated Liverpool 2–1 at Wembley to win the League Cup. Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the goals that delivered the club’s first League Cup and its first major domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup.

The victory ended one of English football’s most discussed trophy waits. It added a new Wembley chapter to a history that also includes the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Newcastle’s first major European honour.
