History
The New Zealand Warriors were founded in 1995 and entered the ARL competition in 1995, becoming the first New Zealand club to compete in the top level of Australian rugby league. Based in Auckland, the Warriors drew on New Zealand's rich rugby league tradition — the country had produced world-class players for generations — and quickly built a passionate fanbase across the country. Their debut season was encouraging, and the club established itself as a competitive presence in the competition across their early years.
The Warriors' greatest moment came in 2002 when they reached the NRL Grand Final, losing to the Sydney Roosters 30–18. The run to the final captured the imagination of New Zealand and generated extraordinary scenes of support across the country. The Warriors have been chasing a return to the grand final ever since, with a fanbase that has remained fiercely loyal despite the wait. The club played their 2021 season entirely in Australia due to COVID-19 border restrictions — a sacrifice that earned them enormous respect across the NRL — and returned to Auckland in 2022 to a hero's welcome. The Warriors continue to be one of the NRL's most supported and most emotionally invested clubs.
