Parramatta Eels

Founded in 1947, the Parramatta Eels represent the western suburbs of Sydney — a working-class heartland that has produced rugby league players for generations. The club joined the NSWRL competition in 1947 and spent their early decades as a competitive but trophy-less side before their golden era arrived in the 1980s. Under coach Jack Gibson and later Terry Fearnley, the Eels won three consecutive premierships in 1981, 1982, and 1983 — a feat matched by only a handful of clubs in the competition's history — and added a fourth title in 1986.

The 1986 premiership remains the Eels' last, and the wait for a fifth title has become one of the defining narratives in NRL rugby league. The club has reached the grand final on multiple occasions since — most recently in 2022, losing to Penrith Panthers — and has consistently been one of the competition's best-supported clubs.
