Western Sydney's rugby league heartbeat and one of the NRL's most passionate and long-suffering fanbases. The Eels won four premierships in the 1980s — including three in a row — and have been chasing a fifth ever since. Blue and gold, loud and loyal — Parramatta is one of the great clubs of Australian rugby league.

History

Founded in 1947, the Parramatta Eels represent the western suburbs of Sydney — a working-class heartland that has produced rugby league players for generations. The club joined the NSWRL competition in 1947 and spent their early decades as a competitive but trophy-less side before their golden era arrived in the 1980s. Under coach Jack Gibson and later Terry Fearnley, the Eels won three consecutive premierships in 1981, 1982, and 1983 — a feat matched by only a handful of clubs in the competition's history — and added a fourth title in 1986.

The 1986 premiership remains the Eels' last, and the wait for a fifth title has become one of the defining narratives in NRL rugby league. The club has reached the grand final on multiple occasions since — most recently in 2022, losing to Penrith Panthers — and has consistently been one of the competition's best-supported clubs. CommBank Stadium in Parramatta is one of the finest venues in the NRL, and the blue and gold of the Eels is worn with the passion of a fanbase that has never stopped believing their time will come again.

Kit History & Colours

Blue and gold — the Eels' colours are among the most recognisable in rugby league. The combination has been the club's signature since their early years and gives Parramatta an identity that is instantly associated with western Sydney and the working-class communities the club represents. The blue and gold jersey is worn with enormous pride by a fanbase that is among the most passionate and loyal in the NRL.

The Eels' home kit is worn at CommBank Stadium — a modern, purpose-built venue in the heart of Parramatta that opened in 2023 and is one of the finest rugby league grounds in Australia. The stadium's location in western Sydney gives the Eels a home that truly reflects the community they represent, and the blue and gold of the home jersey is worn with the hope and determination of a club that knows its next premiership is coming.

Notable Player

Featured Player
Peter Sterling
Peter Sterling is the greatest player in Parramatta Eels history and one of the finest halfbacks rugby league has ever produced. The heartbeat of the Eels' four premiership-winning teams of the 1980s, Sterling was a brilliant game manager with outstanding passing, kicking, and leadership qualities that made him the ideal halfback for Jack Gibson's championship-winning sides. He won four NSWRL premierships with Parramatta (1981, 1982, 1983, 1986) and represented Australia on multiple occasions, earning a reputation as one of the most complete halfbacks of his generation. Sterling's connection to the Eels — he has remained involved with the club as a media personality and ambassador — makes him the definitive symbol of Parramatta's greatest era.
