Pittsburgh GAA brings Gaelic football and Irish culture to Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Gaelic Athletic Association unites the men’s Celtics, women’s Banshees and a youth programme, continuing a local Gaelic-games tradition whose roots reach well beyond the organisation’s formal establishment in 2010.
The Pittsburgh Gaelic Athletic Association, commonly shortened to PGAA or Pittsburgh GAA, was officially established in 2010. Its purpose is to promote Gaelic football and strengthen Irish culture across Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania.
The organisation is home to three connected programmes: the Pittsburgh Celtics men’s football team, the Pittsburgh Banshees ladies’ football team and Pittsburgh GAA Youth. Together they provide competitive and introductory pathways for players across different ages and experience levels.
Gaelic football was played in Pittsburgh decades before PGAA was formed. The club records the official foundation of the Pittsburgh Celtics men’s team in 1976, building on a local Gaelic-football tradition dating back to the 1940s.
The Celtics won their first Midwest Division title in 2002. National success followed with the USGAA Junior B championship in 2011 and Junior A championships in 2012 and 2019. These graded national titles are among the defining achievements in Pittsburgh men’s Gaelic-football history.
The Pittsburgh Banshees were founded in 2002 and won their first Midwest Championship two years later. They developed into regular USGAA Finals participants while adding further divisional and national honours.
The club’s official history records three national championships through the 2023 season. Those achievements belong specifically to the Banshees and sit alongside the separate national record established by the Celtics.
Pittsburgh GAA Youth introduces children in the region to Gaelic games and Irish sporting culture. The programme supports the long-term growth of the games by giving locally raised players an opportunity to learn the skills and traditions of Gaelic football.
The youth section is an important part of the wider PGAA identity: Pittsburgh GAA is not only a pair of adult teams, but a community organisation designed to keep Gaelic games active across generations.
Pittsburgh GAA’s Celtics, Banshees and youth programme are centred on Gaelic football. Pittsburgh Pucas is the city’s separate hurling club, and USGAA lists Pittsburgh GAA and Pittsburgh Pucas Hurling independently within the Midwest Division.
Using the full team name is useful when researching a jersey. A Pittsburgh GAA shirt may relate to the PGAA organisation, the Celtics, the Banshees or its youth programme, while a Pittsburgh Pucas shirt belongs to the separate hurling club.
Pittsburgh GAA jerseys have appeared in different designs and colour combinations across the Celtics, Banshees and wider club range. Green, gold and white connect strongly with the organisation’s Gaelic identity, while darker and maroon-led editions have also appeared.
This FanFile covers Pittsburgh GAA as a club rather than identifying one particular jersey. Check the team wording, crest, manufacturer label, sponsor and product code on your own shirt to determine whether it represents the Celtics, Banshees, youth programme or a particular season.
