History
Portugal's rugby union has grown significantly since the founding of the Federação Portuguesa de Rugby in 1926. Their greatest achievement came in qualifying for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, where they faced New Zealand, Scotland, Romania and Italy — gaining invaluable experience on the world stage.
The highlight of Portugal's rugby history so far came at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, also held in France, where they delivered stunning performances that captured the world's attention. Their attacking, free-flowing style and passionate support made them one of the tournament's most popular sides and signalled the arrival of a genuine emerging rugby nation. Portugal have since qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
