RB Leipzig rose from Germany’s fifth tier to the Bundesliga in only seven seasons. The club has since challenged near the top of German football, reached a UEFA Champions League semi-final and won its first major trophies in a pair of back-to-back German Cup triumphs.
RasenBallsport Leipzig was established in 2009 after Red Bull acquired the playing rights of SSV Markranstädt. The new club began in the fifth-tier NOFV-Oberliga Süd and moved rapidly through the German football pyramid.
Promotion to the Bundesliga arrived in 2016, just seven seasons after the club’s first campaign. Leipzig immediately finished second in its debut top-flight season, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and establishing itself as a leading Bundesliga side.
RB Leipzig reached its first DFB-Pokal final in 2019 and returned in 2021 before finally lifting the trophy in 2022. Leipzig defeated SC Freiburg on penalties after playing much of the final with ten men.
The club retained the cup in 2023 with a 2–0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Later that year, Leipzig defeated Bayern Munich 3–0 to win the DFL-Supercup, adding a third major trophy to the club’s honours list.
Leipzig’s most notable European run came in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League. Victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Atlético Madrid carried the club into the semi-finals, where Paris Saint-Germain ended the campaign.
The run was another sign of Leipzig’s rapid progress, coming only four years after its promotion to the Bundesliga and little more than a decade after the club was formed.
The club’s official name is RasenBallsport Leipzig, usually shortened to RB Leipzig. Although the club is closely associated with Red Bull and nicknamed the Red Bulls, “Red Bull Leipzig” is not its registered football name.
RasenBallsport can be translated loosely as “lawn ball sport”. The wording allows the initials RB to feature prominently while complying with German naming rules.
White and red are central to RB Leipzig’s home identity, matching the club crest and its Red Bulls nickname. Navy and yellow are also regularly used as secondary colours across crests, trim and alternative kits.
