RCD Mallorca are the biggest club in the Balearic Islands and the only one from the islands to play in Spain’s top flight and in Europe. Founded in Palma in 1916, the red-and-black side lifted the Copa del Rey in 2003 and reached a European final at Villa Park four years earlier.

From Alfonso XIII to Real Mallorca

The club was founded on 5 March 1916 by Adolfo Vázquez Humasqué and registered as Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club, named after the Spanish king of the day. When the Second Republic banned references to the monarchy in 1931, it became Club Deportivo Mallorca. The royal title returned in 1949, giving the club the name it carries today.

Mallorca won the Segunda División in 1959/60 to reach the top flight for the first time. For decades after, they moved between divisions, and from 1945 to 1999 played at the Estadi Lluís Sitjar, known locally as es Fortí.

Cúper, Villa Park and Third in Spain

Under Argentine coach Héctor Cúper, Mallorca reached the 1998 Copa del Rey final, losing to Barcelona on penalties after a 1–1 draw. That run put them into the 1998 Supercopa de España, where they beat Barcelona to win the club’s first major title.

Losing that cup final also sent Mallorca into the last ever UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. In their first season of European football they knocked out Chelsea in the semi-finals before losing 2–1 to Lazio at Villa Park, Birmingham, on 19 May 1999. The same season brought a third-place finish in La Liga, a feat they matched in 2001.

Elche 2003 and Seville 2024

On 28 June 2003, Gregorio Manzano’s Mallorca beat Recreativo de Huelva 3–0 in Elche to win the Copa del Rey for the first time. Walter Pandiani scored once and Samuel Eto’o added two late goals.

Mallorca returned to the final in April 2024 at La Cartuja in Seville. Dani Rodríguez put them ahead against Athletic Club, but the match finished 1–1 after extra time and Athletic won 4–2 on penalties.

Club Legend
Samuel Eto’o
Eto’o arrived from Real Madrid in 2000 and spent four seasons at Mallorca, scoring 54 La Liga goals to become the club’s all-time top scorer in the competition. His two goals in the 2003 Copa del Rey final sealed the club’s first trophy. He joined Barcelona in 2004 for a reported €24 million and went on to become one of the great strikers of his generation.

Estadi Mallorca Son Moix

Son Moix opened on 3 July 1999 for the Summer Universiade and replaced the Lluís Sitjar as Mallorca’s home. A major rebuild began in 2022, removing the running track to bring supporters closer to the pitch, adding a new roof on the East Stand and replacing every seat.

The redeveloped stadium was inaugurated on 13 January 2024 against Celta Vigo. It now holds 25,736 spectators, with the L’Infern 1916 stand behind the south goal home to the club’s most vocal supporters.

Mallorca were relegated on the final day of the 2025/26 season despite beating Real Oviedo 3–0 at Son Moix. They finished 18th on 42 points, the highest total for a relegated La Liga side since 2010/11, losing out on the tie-breaker to Osasuna and Levante. Vedat Muriqi scored 23 league goals in that campaign. The club are competing in LaLiga Hypermotion in 2026/27.

Red and Black

Mallorca traditionally wear red shirts with black shorts and socks. The club actually played in all black in its early years, switching to red in 1922 when Adolfo Vázquez Humasqué chose to match the colours of the Spanish national team. The nickname Los Bermellones comes from the Catalan vermelló, describing the bright, orange-tinged red of the shirt.
