History
Senegal announced themselves to the world at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, defeating defending champions France in the opening game and going on to reach the quarter-finals. It remains one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history and sparked a generation of football passion across the country.
Two decades later, Senegal claimed their first AFCON title in 2021 under coach Aliou Cissé, defeating Egypt on penalties in the final. They retained the trophy in 2023, cementing their status as Africa's dominant force. At Qatar 2022 they reached the Round of 16, and with Sadio Mané and a squad full of European-based talent, the Lions of Teranga are consistently among Africa's strongest sides.
