Threecastles is a small Kilkenny hurling club with a big early history. The club won two county senior titles before Kilkenny had won a single All-Ireland, and over the last few seasons it has been climbing back up the junior grades one title at a time.
The club was founded in 1887, only three years after the GAA itself. Within a decade Threecastles were Kilkenny senior champions, beating Confederation 4–01 to 2–03 in the 1898 final with Ned Hennessy as captain.
Hennessy lifted the cup again for the 1903 championship. That final ran into the following year. After a first meeting on 8 May 1904, Threecastles won the replay on 29 May by 2–10 to 0–05 against Kilmanagh. Those two titles still stand as the club’s senior honours, and a county junior championship followed in 1940.
The modern revival began with the Kilkenny Junior C title in 2023. The Junior B championship followed in 2024, and in 2025 the club went after a third title in a row at Junior A. Eamonn Hennessy scored 0-14 in a 0-24 to 0-17 semi-final win over Carrickshock at Dunmore. In the final at Nowlan Park on 29 August 2025, Tullaroan proved too strong and won 0-23 to 2-10.
2026 brought a first for the club. On 14 June, Threecastles beat Glenmore 1-25 to 2-18 at Danesfort to win the JJ Kavanagh Junior A Hurling League for the first time. Alan Guilfoyle managed the team, with Derek Deegan, Robbie Webster, Tom Kelly and Nicky Dreeling as selectors. In the championship they beat Carrickshock and then Dunnamaggin, 2-21 to 1-22, before Shamrocks Ballyhale ended their run in the semi-final at Larchfield on 8 August, 2-26 to 2-16.
Threecastles wear green and yellow, which stands out in a county where so much of the hurling world is black and amber. The club’s gear is sold through its Intosport club shop.
