Historic BestSpanish league runners-up, 1968/69

UD Las Palmas carries the football identity of Gran Canaria in its famous yellow and blue colours. Created in 1949 through the union of five leading island clubs, Las Palmas rose remarkably quickly and went on to challenge Spain’s biggest teams, compete in Europe and reach the Copa del Rey final.

Five Clubs United

Unión Deportiva Las Palmas was officially established on 22 August 1949. Marino, Victoria, Gran Canaria, Atlético and Arenas combined to create one representative club capable of retaining local talent and carrying Gran Canaria into Spain’s national competitions.

The new club progressed at extraordinary speed. Las Palmas earned promotion from the regional competition in its first season and reached Spain’s top division after only two seasons of existence.

Challenging at the Top of Spanish Football

A gifted generation of home-grown players produced the finest period in the club’s history. Las Palmas finished third in the Spanish league in 1967/68 and runners-up in 1968/69, when only Real Madrid finished above the island side.

The club also represented Spain in European competition and reached its only Copa del Rey final in 1978. Las Palmas faced FC Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu, finishing runners-up after a 3–1 defeat.

Estadio de Gran Canaria

UD Las Palmas has played its home matches at the Estadio de Gran Canaria since 2003. The stadium opened on 8 May that year with a friendly in which Las Palmas defeated Belgian club Anderlecht 2–1.

The ground holds 32,400 spectators and replaced the much-loved Estadio Insular, the setting for many of the club’s greatest league and European nights.

Germán Dévora

Club Legend
Germán Dévora
Known as “El Maestro”, Germán Dévora spent his entire professional playing career with UD Las Palmas. He scored 119 goals across 16 seasons, becoming the club’s record goalscorer, and helped lead the celebrated side that finished second in Spain in 1968/69. He later served the club as a coach, technical secretary and honorary president.

Yellow and Blue

Yellow shirts and blue shorts form the traditional UD Las Palmas home identity, reflecting the colours associated with Gran Canaria. The yellow jersey also gives the team its familiar nickname, Los Amarillos.

Las Palmas has frequently used alternate shirts to honour the five clubs that united to form UD Las Palmas. This FanFile covers the team rather than one particular jersey, so check the crest, manufacturer label, sponsor and product code on your shirt to identify its season and edition.
