Uzbekistan’s national team story has been building for decades. Since independence, the country has grown into one of Central Asia’s strongest football nations, regularly competing in Asian qualifying and producing technical, disciplined and increasingly ambitious sides.

For years, Uzbekistan came close to the World Cup without quite getting over the line. That made their 2026 qualification even more meaningful. Colombia were Uzbekistan’s opening opponents and a serious first test. With players such as Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez, Colombia brought rhythm, aggression and South American attacking quality, and they won 3-1, although Abbosbek Fayzullaev’s second-half strike gave Uzbekistan their first ever World Cup goal.

Portugal were the headline opponent in Group K. With Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and a squad full of elite European talent, Portugal were expected to control the game and did, winning 5-0 with Ronaldo scoring twice in the first half.

Congo DR completed the group and brought one of the tournament’s strongest return stories. Eldor Shomurodov gave Uzbekistan an early lead, but the Leopards came back to win 3-1 and take the knockout place that Uzbekistan had hoped to fight for.

White, blue and green — Uzbekistan’s national-team colours are clean, fresh and strongly tied to the national flag. The home shirt is often built around white, with blue and green details giving the White Wolves a distinctive Central Asian identity on the world stage.
