Pretoria's rugby powerhouse and one of the most successful franchises in the history of the game. The Bulls have won three Super Rugby titles and reached three straight United Rugby Championship finals, playing their home matches at the legendary Loftus Versfeld — one of the most intimidating venues in world rugby. Blue, powerful, and relentless.

History

The Blue Bulls Rugby Union was founded in 1938 and the Bulls franchise entered Super Rugby at its inception in 1996. After early struggles, the Bulls became the dominant force in Super Rugby between 2007 and 2010, winning three titles in four years under coaches Heyneke Meyer and Frans Ludeke and with a squad built around Springbok stalwarts. Their 2009 and 2010 back-to-back titles were achieved with a brand of forward-dominated, physically imposing rugby that became their trademark.

Loftus Versfeld — their home in Pretoria — became one of the most feared venues in world rugby during this era, with the Bulls' home record among the best of any team in the southern hemisphere. After joining the United Rugby Championship following South Africa's move from Super Rugby, the Bulls reached the URC final in 2024, 2025 and 2026, losing to Glasgow and then twice to Leinster, confirming their status as one of the premier clubs in world rugby. They remain a cornerstone of Springbok rugby and a club that produces world-class forwards with remarkable consistency.

Kit History & Colours

Blue and white — the Bulls' colours are clean, bold, and deeply associated with Pretoria and the Highveld. The royal blue shirt has been worn since the franchise's earliest years and is one of the most recognisable in South African rugby. It is a kit that carries the identity of a team built on physicality, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of forward dominance — values that have defined the Bulls across every era.

The Bulls' home blue jersey is worn at Loftus Versfeld, a stadium that sits at altitude in Pretoria and has been the scene of some of the most memorable matches in Super Rugby and URC history. The white shorts and blue socks complete a classic combination that has been seen on the biggest stages in world rugby, worn by Springboks who have shaped the game across multiple generations.

Notable Player

Featured Player
Victor Matfield
Victor Matfield is widely regarded as the greatest lock forward in the history of rugby union. A towering lineout specialist with exceptional athleticism, reading of the game, and leadership qualities, Matfield was the cornerstone of the Bulls' Super Rugby dynasty and a key figure in South Africa's 2007 Rugby World Cup triumph. He won three Super Rugby titles with the Bulls and earned 127 Springbok caps across a career that spanned nearly two decades. Matfield's ability to dominate the lineout and his influence on the game around the park set the standard for modern lock play and made him the benchmark against which all locks are still measured.
