Winston-Salem Wolfhounds GAA brings Gaelic football and Irish culture to North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad. Founded in 2015, the community-based club competes at junior level in the USGAA Southeast Division and welcomes players from Irish and non-Irish backgrounds.

Building the Wolfhounds

The Wolfhounds’ story began before their official foundation. On 27 April 2014, a developing Winston-Salem side played an unofficial 11-a-side match against Raleigh Cú Chulainn at Poteat Field, Wake Forest University. It was an early step towards establishing a permanent Gaelic football club in the city.

Timothy Cronin founded the Winston-Salem Wolfhounds in January 2015. The organisation achieved non-profit status in March that year and began developing a club centred on Gaelic football, community participation and Irish cultural understanding.

Representing the Piedmont Triad

The Wolfhounds compete in men’s Gaelic football at junior level within the Southeast Division of the United States Gaelic Athletic Association. Their regional opponents connect Winston-Salem with a wider network of Gaelic games clubs across the southeastern United States.

The club also works to introduce Gaelic football to people with no previous experience of the sport. Its players and supporters come from varied backgrounds, reflecting the international and community-driven character of GAA clubs across the United States.

Cú Faoil Abú

The club uses the Irish phrase Cú Faoil Abú, meaning “Up the Wolfhounds”. It links the team’s nickname with the Irish language and the cultural traditions that sit alongside Gaelic games.

The Wolfhound gives the club a strong visual identity, while the full Winston-Salem name distinguishes it from other teams and organisations that use the same nickname.

Purple and Gold

Purple and gold form the core of the Winston-Salem Wolfhounds’ home-shirt identity. White has also featured prominently in away designs, with club crests, sponsors and graphic detailing changing between different releases.

This FanFile covers the club rather than one particular jersey. Check the crest, sponsor, manufacturer label and care instructions on your own shirt to identify its specific design and edition.
