Wolfe Tones are the most decorated hurling club in Longford. The Edgeworthstown side have won the county senior championship 21 times since 1992, and for most of the last four decades the JJ Duignan Cup has come down to them and Longford Slashers.
Mostrim GAA was founded in 1937 as Mostrim Eoin Ruadhs, shortened to Mostrim the following year. The club’s adult hurling section came much later. It was formed in 1982 under the name St Mary’s before being renamed Wolfe Tones, and it has hurled under that name ever since, which is why match reports often call the team Wolfe Tones Mostrim.
The early years were hard going. Wolfe Tones lost the county final to Slashers Gaels in 1987, 1990 and 1991, the last of those by 3-8 to 0-2. The breakthrough came in 1992, a 2-6 to 1-7 win over the same opponents, and the club went on to win five titles in a row from 1992 to 1996.
More titles came in 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2004. Clonguish Gaels then took over as the main rivals, beating Wolfe Tones in the 2003, 2005 and 2012 finals. Wolfe Tones answered with four in a row from 2007 to 2010, then their best run of all, six straight titles from 2013 to 2018. That run included a 4-11 to 0-10 win over Longford Slashers in 2015.
A group-stage exit in 2019 stung. Captain Aidan Sheridan said that defeat drove the side in 2020, when they came from two points down at half-time to beat Slashers for title number 20. The 21st came on 22 September 2024 at Pearse Park, 2-15 to 3-10 against Slashers, with Killian Courtney and Dylan Hutchinson getting the goals.
The last three county finals have all been Wolfe Tones against Longford Slashers. After the 2024 win, Slashers took the 2025 title in a replay on 11 October, 1-16 to 0-15. In 2026 Bernie Connell’s side reached the final with a 4-20 to 1-10 win over Clonguish Gaels at Michael Fay Park. Slashers won the final at Pearse Park on 6 September, 1-22 to 1-12, despite a second-half goal from Wolfe Tones substitute John Mulhern.
Wolfe Tones hurl in green and red. In 2019 local firm C&D Foods signed a three-year deal to sponsor the Mostrim senior jerseys and the ground, which became C&D Hugh Devine Park, with Quinn’s Hardware staying on as sponsor for minor level and below.
